MusicCounts! was formed in the fall of 2001 by parents, music teachers and administrators in response to the growing concern that the value of music in the Canton Public Schools lacked the appropriate level of appreciaton and, as a consequence, needed support. Music is a significant part of our lives. It allows us to celebrate and to preserve our cultural heritage. Music can bring to life our study of geography, diverse societies, and history. It allows us to express ourselves, explore our imaginations and create new ideas. It enriches our daily lives.

The first year of MusicCounts! saw concrete successes. Most important was the dialog that was created between concerned parents, teachers and administrators. Thanks to support from all three school CAPT’s, we were able to organize and fund a spring All-Town Elementary Band program that provided dedicated fourth and fifth grade instrumental students sectional instruction and an outlet for playing challenging music. Since then, we have provided the seed money to create the Galvin Middle School Jazz Band, All-Town Strings, as well as sponsor small chamber instrumental and voice ensembles for middle and high school students.

Our impact can also be felt in the schools. MusicCounts! featured a public concert by the Five O’Clock Shadow, an a cappella pop/rock group that also held a morning master class for singers in the High School and Middle School Choruses, and performed at an assembly for the entire High School. The following year we sponsored the jazz group Made in the Shade, who performed works in numerous styles for the elementary schools. And the Hansen Elementary School has a dedicated music room thanks to our installation of a soundproofing rug.

MusicCounts! will continue to work with Sarah Gardner Collmer, Coordinator of Performing Arts, along with the music teachers system-wide, to build the music program in the Canton Schools, today and for our children’s futures. We would like to enhance our current music program by bringing in memorable and inspiring artists and performers, integrating music into the core curriculum, and by providing comprehensive and exciting programs in instrumental and choral music.
